MNL: Medieval Nordic Laws A new project at the University of Aberdeen that aims to analyse, edit, translate and comment upon all the Nordic provincial laws from the Middle Ages. The plan is to produce 15 volumes with a translation of, and commentary upon, each law in English, and an online database consisting of facsimiles of the previously published laws in Old Danish, Old Norwegian and Old Swedish. The site also lists past editions of the laws. A related project is The Medieval Nordic Legal Dictionary, which will integrate words and expressions from the original legal texts and the translations from the Old Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Faroese and Gutnish languages.
The Old Västergötland Law A scanned color copy (pdf) of the oldest legal text written in Old Swedish in Latin script and the oldest of Sweden’s medieval laws. The law dates to c. 1220 in Västergötland in Western Sweden. The manuscript, in the National Library of Sweden. dates to the beginning of 1290s. In addition to the text of the laws, the manuscript contains lists compiled c. 1240 of the Västergötland lawmen, the kings of Sweden, and the bishops of the Skara diocese in Västergötland.
